Defining cottagecore

The cottagecore aesthetic is whimsical and dreamy, bringing a certain magical and romanticized connection to nature. Cottagecore embraces coziness and comfort, giving off a soothing vibe to those who adopt the aesthetic.

Cottagecore is also commonly referred to as “farmcore” or “countrycore” as it doesn’t have the sleek and minimalistic design aesthetics of other modern trends. Imagine yourself living in a cozy cottage in the countryside, from soft textures to overgrown flowerbeds. This is the type of aesthetic cottagecore offers.

With the pandemic causing many to stay at home, the transition to staying cozy and adopting at-home hobbies like baking and knitting helped cottagecore rise in popularity.

Translating cottagecore into decor

Cottagecore decor embraces natural elements, letting the sun shine through open windows and airy curtains, bringing warmth through bright colors, and softening a space through knit textures.

While recent trends may have encouraged a sense of minimalism in your space, like Marie Kondo’s gentle reminder to declutter your space by ridding things that don’t bring you joy, cottagecore gives cluttered a new meaning. Adding a collection of prints to the walls, knick-knacks to shelves, and fluffy throws to your couch and armchairs no longer suggest cluttered but will make your space transform into a cozy one.

You may be living in a dreary cityscape, but embracing cottagecore in your apartment can turn your rental into a cozy cottage-esque sanctuary.

Bedrooms of cottagecore

If you are sharing an apartment with roommates, your bedroom may be the only place where you can fully embrace cottagecore in your apartment. Fortunately, it is one of the easiest rooms to embrace the cottagecore aesthetic.

The central focus of your bedroom is likely your bed, and redesigning it to revolve around cottagecore could transform your room. Phase out your plain, basic bedding for something that gives the ultimate cozy feel. Soft, fluffy comforters, knit throws, and fluffy pillows can help you achieve the look (and feel) of the perfect cozy space. Don’t be afraid to incorporate multiple colors and patterns between the comforter, sheet sets, and pillows you ultimately put on your bed.

Staple cottagecore decor pieces

Whether you are only embracing cottagecore in your bedroom or going full out with your entire apartment, there are plenty of ways to transform your space into a whimsical one. There are decorations for every budget, and you may already have what you need for your redecorating journey.

There is no better way to tie nature to your space than bringing in real plants. Sure, you might be living in a third-floor apartment in the city, but getting some greenery can bring new life into your space. Plants with draping vines, like ferns and pothos, can help you build the sought-after cozy cottage vibe. Dried flowers, or keeping fresh flowers around your apartment is another way to incorporate nature. A weekly trip to your local farmer’s market can quickly become your new ritual and encourage you to get creative with handmade bouquets around your apartment.

Vintage rugs and furniture can help your apartment give off the feel of an aged cottage in the countryside. Gone are the days of sleek, impersonal furniture – secondhand furniture can bring some coziness and comfort to your space and your budget. Swap out your black metal bed frame for a rustic wooden one. Fabrics that feature floral prints, stripes, plaid, and gingham can add touches of cottagecore via tapestries, rugs, bedding, pillows, and more around your apartment.

Store your knit throws, extra shoes, and belongings in woven baskets tucked into corners. Use your walls to amplify the cottagecore aesthetic. Choose prints that focus on nature, from mushrooms and florals to butterflies and woodland creatures. DIY your own wall art by making your very own pressed dried flower hangings, handpainted botanical prints, or printing your favorite photos of nature from your travels. Visit your local thrift store to search their collection of frames and mirrors, rustic-looking frames can enhance the cottagecore vibes that your collection of wall art already has.

Build up your bookshelves with knick-knacks that add character and books. A few trips to local thrift stores can give you the perfect amount of eclectic knick-knacks and old, yellowed books to decorate your apartment.

Embracing the cottagecore aesthetic can be the perfect way to upgrade an apartment. Happy decorating!
